Inspiring Design with Innovative Technology

Implementing BIM can feel a bit overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. We believe it’s critical to select a BIM solution that supports your design process and inspires creativity. In this video learn how Orcutt | Winslow benefits from BIM at each stage of the architecture process. Saravanan Balasubramanian, LEED AP and Russ Sanders, AIA also reveal the keys to winning a project in Mumbai, India, and how they expect the project, Sahana Pride, to progress using the latest technologies.

Implementing BIM

At ARCHVISTA we understand that design is really what it’s all about. That’s why when we talk about BIM integration we like to start with your current design process and move on from there. Our experience implementing BIM in companies of different sizes, with different focuses and different backgrounds allows us to make informed recommendations on integrating BIM tools and processes into your workflow.

  • When selecting a BIM tool it’s important to find a program that is flexible while intuitive, supports your software/hardware platforms and has a good price/value ratio. Implementing BIM is a choice that defines the years ahead and these factors must be taken seriously.
  • BIM is a better way to accomplish the same tasks compared to traditional methods. There is no need to offer new services, such as energy calculation, cost calculation, visualization, or quantity take-offs if the office hasn’t been engaged in these tasks before. Use BIM to strengthen your core competencies, before trying to implement new ones.
  • Appoint one or more “agents”, as power users; the ones who can mentor the rest of the design office. They must be trained before the rest of the studio is reorganized and will have time to gain confidence with the software. Create a plan with them to find which projects and employees should be initially involved in the transition.
  • Choose short training courses (up to three days) and give employees the opportunity to follow-up, support, consult in-person and pursue advanced/special courses later.
  • Do not commit partially to BIM. Make sure to implement BIM 100% in a particular project for best results.
  • Support employees, it is difficult to work with a new procedure, but please bear in mind that is not just a decision but a debatable topic up for discussion. The second you stop and look back, is the second when you stop moving forward.
  • Remember BIM is a tool for 3D design, but implementation applies to all phases from initial sketches to construction to operation.
  • Transfer the entire company quickly and when complete you can evaluate the possibility of new services.
